熱く語った日本への想い

　エスピノーサ氏はインタビューの最後に、日本への思いを熱く語った。1980年代の輝きを再び取り戻せないかという問いかけだ。技術、人材、政治が一体となれば達成できるはずだと強調し、日産社長として日本に貢献したいとの意向も示した。

　1980年代を振り返ると、日本はテクノロジーの頂点にあった。私が子ども時代に触れた技術関連のものは、すべて日本製だった。課題は、どうすれば最先端技術を日本に再びもたらせるかである。日本には産業基盤があり、それを実現できることは過去に証明済みだ。

　優秀な人材、優れたエンジニア、産業を支援する政府も存在する。各関係者が協力すれば、日本は再びテクノロジーの頂点に立てる。日産のような企業を率いる一生に一度の機会を得た私が、後世に残したいもののひとつは、日本への貢献であるという。

「When you take a step back in the 80s, Japan was the pinnacle of technology. Every single thing that I touched with my hands when I was a kid regarding technology was coming from Japan. So I think the question is how can we
bring this edge to Japan again? How can we make Japan quick, trying to
align all the different stakeholders to bring Japan back to what it was because we have Japanese industry and we have proven that we can do it. We have done it in the past, so why not do it again? We have the people, we have the right engineering minds, we have a government that is relatively supportive of the industry and we should continue working with them. So for me one of the things that I would love to leave as a legacy of you know once you have a once in a lifetime opportunity to lead a company like Nissan will be contributing to this. How can we make Japan again a pinnacle of technology? This is what I would like to, you know, leave when I finish my duty in this current role.」

「80年代を振り返ると、日本は技術の最先端だった。子どもの頃、技術に関わって手に取ったものは全て日本製だった。だから問題は、どうすればこの優位性を再び日本に持ってくるかだ。どうすれば日本を迅速に、さまざまな利害関係者を調整して、かつての日本を取り戻せるか。日本の産業は存在し、それが可能だと証明済みだからだ。過去に成し遂げたのだから、再びできないはずがない。人材も、優れた技術者も、産業を比較的支援する政府もある。彼らとの協働を続けるべきだ。日産のような企業を率いるという一生に一度の機会を得た者として、私が遺したい遺産のひとつは、この取り組みへの貢献だ。どうすれば日本を再び技術の頂点に立てられるか？これが現在の役職を終える際に、私が残したい成果だ」
